Sania Mirza - Chuang falter in semifinal

ImageSania Mirza and Chia-Jung Chuang of China bowed out in straight sets against third seeds Lisa Raymond of USA and her Czech partner Kveta Peschke in the women's doubles semifinal of the USD 4.5 million Miami Masters here.

The unseeded Indo-Chinese duo lost 6-7 (5/7) 4-6 making way for Raymond and Peschke to enter the final of the prestigious hard court event here late last night.

Sania and Chuang matched their higher-ranked opponent game by game in the opening set and stretched the affair into tie-breaker but they were soon overpowered by the USA-Czech pair.

Sania Mirza - Chuang in doubles quarters at Miami

ImageIndia's Sania Mirza and Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) registered an upset win over eighth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta and Russian Maria Kirilenko to storm into the doubles quarter-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open.

The unseeded Indo-Taiwanese pair rallied from a set down to beat Pennetta and Kirilenko 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-4 here on Monday.

Sania and Chuang next play the winner of the match between Israel's Shahar Peer and Argentine Gisela Dulko and second-seeded Spaniards Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual.

ImageSania Mirza's lean patch continued as the Indian ace crashed out of the USD 4,500,000 Sony Ericsson Open after losing a gruelling first round match against world number 65 Mathilde Johansson of France here.

Sania, a wild card entrant, won the first set but could not survive the battle of nerves and lost 6-1 6-7 (2) 6-7 (8) against her rival. Also making a first round exit was India's teen sensation Yuki Bhambri, who put up a valiant fight against world number 73 Diego Junqueira of Argentina.

The 15-year-old Indian wild card showed a steely resolve as he kept his seasoned opponent in fight for one hour and 22 minutes before losing 4-6 3-6. Sania had failed to move beyond the second round at Indian Wells last week.

Sania Mirza slips to 100 in singles, 87 in doubles

ImageAn average outing at Indian Wells tournament cost Sania Mirza 13 places in the WTA rankings and the Indian ace now stands yet again on the verge of dropping out of top-100.

With 646 points in her kitty, Sania stands at 100 in the singles and at 87, a loss of 16 positions, in the doubles in the list issued by WTA on Monday.

In the men's ranking, Somdev Devvarman remained static at 150 in the singles ATP list with 546 points.

In doubles, Leander Paes (6780) and Mahesh Bhupathi (6165) also kept their fifth and eighth position respectively.

ImageOn a mixed day for the Indians, Mahesh Bhupathi advanced to the men's doubles second round but Sania Mirza crashed out of the women's doubles event at the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells.

Sania and her partner Chia-Jung Chuang of Taipei went down 1-6 4-6 to the Argentine-Israeli team of Gisela Dulko and Shahar Peer in the opening round.

However, Sania is still in contention in the singles event and the Indian ace takes on 12th seed Italian Flavia Panetta after a hard-fought first round victory on Thursday.

Sania Mirza enters 2nd round of Indian Wells Open

ImageWild card Sania Mirza came back from the brink to beat Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva in a grueling three-setter and enter the second round of the USD 4.5 million BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Sania trailed 2-6 1-3 before bouncing back to win the match 2-6 6-3 6-2 and set up a tough clash against 12th seed Italian Flavia Pennetta, who got a first-round bye.

In a contest that ended just three seconds short of being two hours long, Sania was completely outplayed in the opening set in which Koryttseva broke her thrice to clinch it 6-2.

Sania Mirza rises in WTA ranking

ImageSania Mirza's WTA rankings improved marginally this week and the Indian ace was 87th in singles and 71st in doubles in the latest list issued on Monday.

The numero uno Indian woman player, who will play at Indiana Wells this week, has 726 points in singles and 1382 points in doubles.

In the ATP rankings, India's new tennis poster boy Somdev Devavrman had his ranking unchanged at 150 with 546 points

In doubles, Leander Paes (6940) returned to the top-five after gaining a place but his compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi (6325) slipped a rung to eighth.
 

Sania Mirza-Santangelo in Dubai Open pre-quarters

ImageSania Mirza and her Italian partner Mara Santangelo advanced to the doubles pre-quarterfinals of the $2 million Dubai Tennis Championships after getting a walkover from Poland's Urszula Radwanska and Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland in the first round here.

An injury to Radwanska forced the Polish-American pair to give away the match to their opponents.

Sania and Sanatangelo now have a tough job at hand as they face top seeded pair of Zimbabwean Cara Black and American Lizel Huber in the second round.

Sania's singles campaign had ended yesterday (Tuesday) after losing her second round match to Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.
 

Sania Mirza in second round at Dubai

ImageWild card Sania Mirza overcame a sluggish start to beat Russian Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets and enter the second round of the USD two million Dubai Tennis Championships here.

The in-form Indian, who finished runners-up at last week's Pattaya Open in Thailand, defeated Makarova 7-5 6-2 after slogging it out for one hour and 27 minutes in the opening round of the hard court event.

Sania will now be up against 16th seed Spaniard Kaia Kanepi in the second round.

Sania Mirza finishes runner-up at Pattaya Open

ImageSania Mirza's quest for her second WTA singles title continued after the Indian ace went down fighting 5-7 1-6 against world number five and top seed Vera Zvonareva in the final of the USD 220,000 Pattaya Open on Sunday (February 15).

Sania fought her heart out against her formidable opponent but the Russian drew from her vast experience to halt the India's brilliant run in the one hour and 17 minutes contest.
