Sania Mirza upset with Mahesh Bhupathi

ImageSania Mirza is all praise for Mahesh Bhupathi after they won the Australian Open mixed doubles title but the tennis ace is also upset with him for not taking her to watch 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Sania wanted to watch the much-acclaimed film, directed by Danny Boyle, but instead of taking her along, Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna went ahead and saw the movie.

"Mahesh and Rohan ditched me and went to watch 'Slumdog Millionaire'," Sania said on Tuesday.

Winning Grand Slam title was always a dream : Sania Mirza

Sania Mirza, who won her first ever senior Grand Slam title, partnering compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi in the Australian Open, termed her victory Down Under as a dream that has come true.

Sania, who received an overwhelming welcome on return to Hyderabad, told reporters that it was one of the most special wins in her career.

"Its one of most special wins, it's a Grand Slam. And it's something that we always play for and pray for when we are growing up. So I am just happy that I could win this and achieve a Grand Slam, which has been my dream always," she said.

Sania Mirza to miss Fed Cup tie

ImageIn a big setback to the Indian Fed Cup team, Sania Mirza will miss the upcoming Group I Asia/Oceania zone tie, citing an abdominal injury.

The Fed Cup tie will begin in Perth, Australia from Wednesday and the Indian team has been reduced to three members now.

No replacement can be sent to the event as the last date for sending the substitute has lapsed.

Sania suffered the injury during her Australian Open campaign, an All India Tennis Association official said. "We were told yesterday that she will not play. Her father spoke to me and informed," said an AITA official.

Last year also, Sania did not play the Fed Cup matches though she was part of the team.

The Indian team comprises Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri and Rushmi Chakravarthi.

ImageIndia's star tennis player Sania Mirza said on Monday that winning the Australian Open mixed doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi was the best way she could make a comeback in the international circuit.

The duo was give a rousing welcome at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Monday after they became the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam mixed doubles.

"It is very special to win your first Grand Slam. After the injury it is a great way to come back. I am just living in the moment for now," said Sania.

Sania Mirza -Bhupathi win mixed doubles at Australian Open

ImageMahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza registered their first Grand Slam title together, crushing Andy Ram and Natalie Dechy in straight sets in the mixed doubles final of the Australian Open here on Sunday.

The Indian wild card pair proved too good for the Israeli-French duo, thrashing them 6-3, 6-1 in 55 minutes.

The win also gave Bhupathi his 11th Grand Slam title --seventh in mixed doubles. This was also Bhupathi's second mixed doubles title here, following his 2006 triumph with Martina Hingis.

For Sania, it was her maiden Grand Slam title.

Sania Mirza & Bhupathi enter Mixed Doubles

ImageSania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi overcame a sluggish start to sail into the Australian Open mixed doubles finals for the second consecutive year after beating Czechs Iveta Benesova and Lukas Dlouhy in straight sets today. The Indians, who were runner-up at the Melbourne Park last year, trailed 1-3 in the opening set before storming back to seal the issue 6-4, 6-1 in 54 minutes. In the summit clash, they will take on the unseeded French-Israeli combine of Nathalie Dechy and Andy Ram. Dechy and Andy defeated seventh seeded Spaniards Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo 7-6 , 6-4 in the semi-final.

Her face, which was a perennial picture of doubt and fear, is suddenly replaced by smiles and eagerness at her current form.

Sania Mirza can take some cues from these women who have endured much, but have managed to prevail against all odds. She was finally back on court after a six month injury lay off. Despite a surgery on her wrist in March last year, she never recovered.

Sania Mirza crashed out of the Australian Open

ImageIndian icon Sania Mirza crashed out of the Australian Open Wednesday but said she was just happy to be back after a painful six months on the sidelines.

Her 6-3, 6-2 loss to Russian 10th seed Nadia Petrova was only her second match back and even winning once here was good enough for Mirza, who shoulders the hopes and expectations of a sports-mad nation.

But the 22-year-old vowed to bounce back as she works to once again to match her career-high of 27 after recovering from a serious wrist injury.

"I'm just happy to be back and doing what I love doing, playing tennis and competing," she said.

Sania advances to 2nd round of Australian Open

ImageSania Mirza survived a late onslaught from world number 61 Marta Domachowhska to set up a second-round clash with Russian 10th seed Nadia Petrova in the women's singles of the Australian Open, here today. The unseeded Indian battled past the Pole 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.

Nadia beat Kazakhstan Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 7-6 (3) in her opening round match.

Sania, playing her first singles match of the season after a long injury-lay off, was happy with her comeback match.

Sania Mirza faces Domachowska in first round

ImageIndia's Sania Mirza will begin her singles campaign against Marta Domachowska of Poland in the Australian Open tennis beginning here Monday.

Sania is on a comeback trail after remaining out of action for most part of 2008 due to a career threatening wrist injury and her ranking has slipped from a high of 27 to current 107.

The 22-year-old Indian's first round opponent is ranked 61st and reached Australian Open quarterfinal last year to register her best Grand Slam performance so far.
