There has been a lot of talk over the past couple of years: whether Sania Mirza is all media hype and little substance, that she’s glamour, glitz and good looks but her on-court performances don’t match the build-up.
Much as she has tried to counter this she has had her critics who keep pointing out to her record. And if anything her steep fall in the rankings would give her detractors a lot of ammunition.
In the latest WTA chart she has slid to as low as 91. It is not that she has been playing badly; the fact is that she’s hardly been playing at all and that’s her problem. |

Controversies over the selection of support staff for the Beijing-bound Indian contingent cropped up on Friday when the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) decided to include tennis star Sania Mirza’s mother as one of the officials of the tennis squad.
While top officials of the IOA decided not to talk on the issue, sources in the IOA revealed that Mrs Nasima Mirza would accompany her daughter in the Olympics as one of the coaches of the tennis team.
“There was a time when the IOA was willing to send seven officials for the our-member tennis team as they were unable to withstand pressure from the top tars like Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza,” sources said.
But finally, the number of support staff for the tennis team has been brought own to four. They are — Nandan Bal, Scott Davidson, Renuka Pinto (Sania’s physio) and Nasima Mirza.
