Sania advances to 2nd round of Australian Open

ImageSania Mirza survived a late onslaught from world number 61 Marta Domachowhska to set up a second-round clash with Russian 10th seed Nadia Petrova in the women's singles of the Australian Open, here today. The unseeded Indian battled past the Pole 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.

Nadia beat Kazakhstan Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 7-6 (3) in her opening round match.

Sania, playing her first singles match of the season after a long injury-lay off, was happy with her comeback match.

Sania Mirza faces Domachowska in first round

ImageIndia's Sania Mirza will begin her singles campaign against Marta Domachowska of Poland in the Australian Open tennis beginning here Monday.

Sania is on a comeback trail after remaining out of action for most part of 2008 due to a career threatening wrist injury and her ranking has slipped from a high of 27 to current 107.

The 22-year-old Indian's first round opponent is ranked 61st and reached Australian Open quarterfinal last year to register her best Grand Slam performance so far.

Sania mirza -Francesca stunned at Hobart WTA event

ImageSania Mirza and Francesca Schiavone's were handed a straight-set defeat by Spanirad Arantxa Parra Santonja and Edina Gallovits of Romania at the doubles event of the $220,000 Hobart International WTA tournament on Wednesday.

The fourth seed Indo-Italian pair lost 5-7, 1-6 to their unseeded opponents in the quarterfinal of the hard court event.

Sania-Francesca could not convert any of the two breakpoints in the match while the winners capitalised on the three of the four chances.

Sania Mirza-Francesca Schiavone in Hobart quarters

ImageSania Mirza, playing her first competitive match since a long injury lay-off, and her Italian partner Francesca Schiavone reached the doubles quarter-finals of the $220,000 WTA Hobart International tournament here on Monday.

The fourth seeded Indo-Italian pair defeated Latvian Liga Dekmeijre and Turkey's Ipek Senoglu 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the first round of the hard court event.

It took Sania and Schiavone one hour and 24 minutes to carve out the hard-fought win.

Sania slips to 107th spot

ImageWith his giant-killing spree at the Chennai Open, where he finished runner-up, Somdev Devvarman has climbed 48 rungs to be placed 154th in the ATP rankings issued today.

Somdev, who was at 202nd place last week, made some astonishing upsets at the Chennai Open, defeating Spaniard Carlos Moya and Ivo Karlovic before his amazing run finally came to an end with the loss to Croat Marin Chilicloss in the final last night.

The 23-year-old Somdev, currently has 562 points to his name.

Sania back from injury - with help from cricket Yuvvraaj

ImageIndian tennis star Sania Mirza said Monday she had recovered from a "career-threatening" injury with help from top cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

A beaming Mirza was delighted to be back on court after the painful wrist problem which forced her out of the Beijing Olympics in tears and left her unable even to lift a fork to eat.

Mirza is taking part in the World Team Challenge exhibition event here following treatment recommended by Singh, her friend and an Indian Test batsman.

Fit-again Sania in Fed Cup team

ImageA fit-again Sania Mirza will spearhead India’s challenge at the Fed Cup Asia Oceania (Group 1) tennis event to be played in Australia next month.

Sania, who makes a comeback after a prolonged injury hiatus, will be joined by sisters Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri, and veteran Rushmi Chakravarthi after a sports ministry guideline barred expatriate players, without Indian citizenship, from representing the country.

Enrico Piperno will be the non-playing captain of the team.

Sania's security withdrawn as she fails to pay charges

ImageThe security provided to ace tennis star Sania Mirza has been withdrawn by Andhra Pradesh police for "failing" to pay user fee for the security she had obtained.

Hyderabad City Commissioner of Police B Prasada Rao told reporters here today that notices were issued to Sania and others asking them to make necessary payments for the security obtained from City Security Wing (CSW).

Sania Mirza conducts coaching camp in Hyderabad

ImageAce Tennis player Sania Mirza conducted a coaching camp organised by corporate giant GVK Group here today.

"Competition in international tennis is ever growing. Right training provided at a tender age goes a long way," she said on the occasion.

The camp was aimed at improving skills and techniques of children undergoing training at the GVK Tennis Academy, said a release.
