Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi overcame a sluggish start to sail into the Australian Open mixed doubles finals for the second consecutive year after beating Czechs Iveta Benesova and Lukas Dlouhy in straight sets today. The Indians, who were runner-up at the Melbourne Park last year, trailed 1-3 in the opening set before storming back to seal the issue 6-4, 6-1 in 54 minutes. In the summit clash, they will take on the unseeded French-Israeli combine of Nathalie Dechy and Andy Ram. Dechy and Andy defeated seventh seeded Spaniards Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo 7-6 , 6-4 in the semi-final.
Serena and Venus Williams won their eighth Grand Slam women's doubles title today with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Japan's Ai Sugiyama. The Williams sisters, seeded 10th, looked unflustered in the Australian Open final as they served out the first set in just 38 minutes. US veteran Serena Williams will take on Russia's Dinara Safina in women's singles final on Saturday. The American is favourite to win her fourth Australian title while Safina is in search for a first Grand Slam crown. Switzerland's Roger Federer blasted Andy Roddick to reach the Australian Open final. Federer defeated Roddick 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinal. Federer will take on the winner of all Spanish second semi-final between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco. |
