Seventh-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko beat India’s Sania Mirza 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round of the MPS Group Championships here on Monday.In other matches, 14-year-old Madison Keys made her WTA Tour debut with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Russian Alla Kudryavtseva. Keys, who made her professional debut at the $25,000 Challenger at Fort Walton Beach, becomes one of the youngest players to win a WTA match. American Mary Joe Fernandez holds the record, notching her first victory at 13 years seven months, according to the WTA. Keys admitted she was nervous at the beginning of the match, but she kept her poise as she displayed strong groundstrokes and finished off the match with an ace. “The first two or three games I was nervous,” she said. “It was kind of just the first few games of just hitting the ball and feeling it and really getting into a rhythm that made me feel a lot better.” |
